The 2014 World Cup Social Media

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

On June 30th, Jett shed some light on a day most people were unaware of - Social Media Day or #SMDay. What better way to follow up with SMDay than with the recent 1-0 German victory over Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final? The world cup is responsible for an unprecedented spike in social media activity!

On July 13th, 2014 a historical record-breaking number of tweets and Facebook posts swept the world with the winning goal of German player Mario Götze. To put these statistics into perspective we can turn to an article posted by yahoo news, “According to Twitter, there were a record 618, 725 tweets per minute at one point during Germany’s 1-0 win, outpacing the 580, 166 tweets-per-minute during Germany’s 7-1 semifinal victory over Brazil.”

Twitter was kind enough to post a global heat map of activity during the July 13th final and the July 8th semifinal. This heat map of activity resembles what an international Fourth of July would look like from space. You can see it for yourself on: http://yhoo.it/1rosKQ1
